Your first rental pickup: a practical checklist
Prepare your appointment, review the vehicle, and organize the information you need for a clear, unhurried handover.
Illustrative vehiclesConfirm the appointment before you travel
Ask the rental team to confirm your pickup time, exact location, contact person, and the vehicle being offered. Check which documents and payment method to bring, and whether there are any steps you must complete before arriving.
Keep the appointment details and written quote together. If you are relying on a particular category or feature, confirm it again before making the trip. An availability request and a confirmed pickup appointment are different stages, so make sure you know which one you have.
Review the agreement with your quote beside it
At handover, compare the vehicle and charges in the agreement with the details you were given. Check the rental term, next payment date, mileage conditions, deposit information, and return arrangements. Give yourself enough time to read rather than feeling rushed to leave.
Ask the team to explain anything you do not understand before completing the paperwork. Request copies of the documents you will need during the rental, along with the contact information for routine questions and urgent problems.
Walk around the vehicle together
Review the vehicle's condition with the team and make sure existing marks or concerns are recorded in the handover documentation. Take clear photos, where permitted, that show the condition at pickup. Include the interior and the displayed mileage and fuel or charge level.
If you notice something unexpected, raise it before driving away and ask how it will be documented or resolved. Keep your own copies with the agreement so the pickup condition is easy to reference later.
Get comfortable with the controls
Adjust your seat and mirrors while parked. Locate the lights, wipers, hazard switch, climate controls, and fuel or charging access. Check how the vehicle locks and how to use any equipment supplied with it.
Ask about unfamiliar controls or warning indicators before leaving. Take a moment to set up navigation and a safe place for your phone while stationary. If a control or vehicle condition concerns you, ask the team to address it before you begin your journey.
Leave with the next steps written down
Confirm how to contact the team, arrange maintenance, request an extension, and return the vehicle. Add any relevant dates to your calendar, and keep the rental documents somewhere you can reach easily.
Before using the vehicle for platform work, complete any remaining checks for the exact vehicle, rental arrangement, and your account. A careful pickup helps you leave knowing what you have agreed to and where to get help when a question comes up.
A little preparation goes a long way.
